Cryptography Key Terminology

Cryptography is the study and practice of techniques used to secure communication so that only those for whom the data is intended can read it. However before we explore cryptography in more detail, lets first cover some essential terminology to help you along the way. Let's start with encryption...

Encryption is the process of encoding data in such a way that only authorised parties can read it.

And with encryption we, of course, need decryption, as you may have guessed, decryption has the opposite effect of encryption i.e. it is the process of decoding encrypted data so that it can be read once more.

Then we have something known as a cipher. In cryptography, a cipher refers to an algorithm designed to perform encryption or decryption on data

Finally, we have ciphertext. Ciphertext is the resulting data encrypted using a cipher Now that we’ve covered some of the basics, let's move on and take a deeper look into the world of cryptography
